Overview

  • BY Brittany Barratt

I’ve always lived in North Queensland, growing up on a cane farm and I have been hunting forever since I was inside my mum’s tummy bouncing around in the cruiser boxing pigs. Every chance we got when I was a little girl, for as young as I can remember when dad wasn’t working and mum was on night shift we would take the dogs for a run which meant early mornings before school and almost every afternoon we arrived home. Us kids would get dressed in our uniforms, have our bags packed and lunches made ready for our next boar adventure, in either dad’s old green Hilux or the quad. I remember one morning our black dog Arnold who was a mongrel breed and probably one of the best dogs I’ve seen hunt to this day, was that keen he jumped off the Ute into the cane. It was all quiet and then we heard the biggest hit up and it was on. Arnold eventually got him out on the headland and would bail by himself until dad would get there and then he would lug. He caught the biggest cane boar I’ve seen which went around 150kg from memory and was a proper cow!

Eventually, I met someone who enjoyed this lifestyle and grew up similar to the way I did and now we’ve been together for about three years and I tell you what we have had some mad adventures with who is now our main dog Steer who is also a mongrel breed. Steer is a very loyal dog and always will do anything to please you which means he will go the 8km to get a pig. I tell you what it’s not fun doing a casual 8km run all on foot but its worth it when you get there to see him bailing up a big stinker and lugging as soon as we get there. We normally work him by himself or with our old main dog Smig who is pitty x Arab. He finds us all our big boars and tonners cause he’s got an insanely sensitive nose and is absolutely mad keen on pigs. I remember one time, in particular, we were on a block that has a lot of basalt country through it. Steer went absolutely berzerk and when he smells scent, he will let out a bark to let us know. We stopped and off he goes and before we knew it, there was a massive hit up.

You know when the stinkers don’t make a sound, it’s a good pig. We were just behind him as the hit up happened and he knew we weren’t too far off him so he lugged up. We got there and holy moly it was a big tonner basalt boar. He was cranky as hell and giving a proper fight so we let Smig out into the action and for a bit of backup. I got in there and finished him off, it was over before we knew it and we were absolutely stoked about Steers efforts and old Smig getting in there too like he was still a spring chicken. We ended up with five nice healthy boars for the night and the dogs were keen for a rest. We have caught many pigs over the 3 years my partner and I have been together and there will be plenty more to come. Soon we will be breeding Steer so we will soon see what we are in for. If the pups are anything like him we will have a good pack of mad boar chases.
