Overview

  • Dad, Wade, Josh and I set out for a property near Brewarrina. It was a long drive for the dogs and us; we pulled up at Walgett and had a few minutes to get food, and water the dogs, then got back on the road. It was about lunchtime when we pulled into the feedlot on the property, I plated up my dog Billy and my dad’s pup Crew, and Wade plated his two dogs, Bing and Jack. We went through the first gate, within about 5 minutes the dogs jumped and got a young boar. I finished him off, and we kept going, we pulled up at a spot where we wanted to camp, gave the dogs some water and put them in the shade. Before long we had camp set up and kicked back for an hours rest, we had heard there were goats on the property as well, so we decided to put the guns in the ute, and go for a look.

We turned out onto the road and saw a mob of goat’s straight up, there was some good Billy’s in the mob, we got a bit closer, and Wade had a crack at them with his 243 he got a nice goat with a good spread. We kept going keen to get a boar as well. We went to the water hole, but there was nothing around there, so we decide to drive around the boundary. After 10 minutes we saw some suckers run across the road and off goes the dogs, we kept going around, Billy made a keen jump I saw the mob he was going after. There was a good boar in there, and he had about 150 meters on Billy, he mowed him down with no trouble. When I got there my dad’s pup had a good hold as well, I pulled Billy off and run him on. Sending him towards the mob which was out of sight by then.

With no trouble, Billy tracked them and lugged a cranky sow, around 60kg. We headed back to camp happy with our days catch but the dogs were still keen as and so where we, a night hunt was a good idea apart from the misty rain, but that didn’t slow the dogs down. Cruising around I picked two pigs up in the spotlight one good Boar about 65kg the dogs chased them to the fence Billy was the only dog that jumped the fence and took off after the Boar. Billy had him roughly 650 meters out towards the feedlot, it was a Black and white boar he was cranky and ready to fight. After a long walk back to the truck we kept driving on, I saw another solid boar, this boar being around 70kg Billy and Bing was onto it, Billy hit it first then Bing flew in, another one bites the dust. We came across a massive mob of goats; we started laying a few big ones out 11 goats all up; after that, we headed back to camp for a few hour’s sleep. The next morning at around 4 am we threw the dogs back on the truck and headed out again, we were hitting mobs every 15 minutes but only small stuff, so we ended up heading back to camp.

On the way back, there was a good mob of pigs roughly a hundred it was unbelievable just ripping up the paddock, so we unclipped the dogs and off they went. Billy was the first dog at the mob he chased a good boar away from the mob, it was around 80kg, and he hit it at top speed. Dad was chasing the mob with Crew, his pup and Wade was in there too with his pup Jack which is Crews brother. Dad and Crew got a sucker and Wade, Jack and Bing got a nice pig as well. We headed back to camp; I went for a quick walk from camp up the fence line with the gun to see if I could bag a goat. Josh and I had come across a mob of goats, and I picked the biggest billy I could see and took the shot at around 140 meters and a successful shot it was.

I claimed the goat I shot, and then Josh and I headed back to camp. That night we went for another hunt with the dogs we hunted around the entire place and didn’t see a pig, and the dogs never jumped once, so we started heading back to camp. Josh spotted a small boar around 50kg, and we let the two young pups go, the boar stood to fight the pups but didn’t win the pups had him locked down. When we got back to camp we packed some gear up, slept until 2 am then loaded our gear and started the long drive home. With 19 Pigs & 13 Goats for the trip, it was a good trip.
