It was around 2:30am when I got the call from a good mate Joe to say we were going hunting. He was keen to get into a few so we met up and loaded the dogs. We had Prickle the bitsa, Buddy who is also a bitsa, and Critter the Bully Grey. The dogs were keen and we set off into the darkness and fog. Upon arriving at the block we saw there was a lot of dew and fog around that night with not so much as a breath of wind. These were not the best conditions for us but we ended up deciding to hunt on knowing what could be up in the mountains. We were nearly at the end of the track, the dogs hadn’t jumped at all but they got keen a few times. We were just hoping they would get a scent strong enough to make them follow it. We turned around and started to head back the way we came,as we did a slight breeze came through the ute and instantly the dogs jumped straight off. Hoping they would make it far enough to catch up with the boar, Critter and Prickle worked for around half an hour and ended up coming back to the ute empty handed, but they weren’t interested in jumping back on the tray. They floated again, going out a fair way, a little bit further than before when we were on! Joe heard a faint bark and hit up in the distance, I looked at the tracker and they were treed at 780m, we got in there quickly with not a sound coming out of the boar the whole time. We got in and dispatched the good fella. It was great to see the dogs work hard in tough conditions and coming up with the goods, smashing this cracker boar. It just goes to show the early bird does gets the boar.
