Overview

  • By Jamie Leigh Humberdross

Many years ago I had the choice of buying a puppy from a litter $400 for one or $600 for the mum already working. Her name was Molly, and when I first saw her, I knew she was the type of dog you just had to love. After deciding to get her, she has been worth every cent, not only as a pig dog but a friend as well. She is a funny dog; if I leave her at home so I can work other dogs she will sulk, won’t eat, won’t even look at me. She is stock and pest proof, but if for some reason I say no or something when we are out hunting, she won’t work properly for the rest of the trip. I’ve never seen a dog like it, a dog with such a personality. The only thing she has ever done wrong is run way too far and sometimes takes forever to come back. But she is 19 years old, so I can’t blame her for being on the slow side now. She had a c section done on her about two years ago, she had stopped coming into season with her old age and magically she did and fell pregnant with one puppy, but it didn’t make it. When we had to get her from the vet after her c section I went to pick her up, I was expecting her to be happy to see me but not old molly she just walked straight past me as if to say you left me here.

Molly was also used for a foster dog for many people because she has such amazing motherly instinct; she would foster almost anything. I could tell many more stories to be honest because we have a fair few dogs and none of them compare to her, I love them all, but there is just something about her. She doesn’t care if she catches a sow or a boar but I’ve noticed she won’t touch any piglets, I’ve put it down to her motherly instincts. Years ago I quite often spent a lot of nights walking property to property asking if could go looking for her back before we had trackers. She just doesn’t give up, always give it 100 percent. Now with her old age, she gets a needle that helps lubricants her joints as she is starting to feel it, but she still loves what she does. We don’t let her jump on and off the Ute any more just for her joints she gets lifted every time, and she will wait now for us to lift her off and on the ute. If she’s keen she lets us know, she gets vocal, and we know there is a pig about.  A lot of people think we should retire her cause she is too old, but I don’t think she would handle being left at home every time. The day she stops hunting will probably be the day she gives up.
