Overview

It was the start of November, and things were starting to heat up in the North West. A good mate of mine, Matt, was keen to go for a hunt and I knew where a few hogs were hanging out, so I was keen to get there myself! We got to the property around lunchtime, the perfect time to check a few waters. After checking the fourth water hole on the place and a few creeks with a bit of water in them, there was plenty of sign about, but things were looking pretty sad! Finally, we come across two boars in the water. Matt grabbed his 12-month-old pup ‘4-Paws’, and sent him in. He grabbed the first Boar, Matt dispatched him then run the dog on to the other boar, 4 paws caught him as well nothing special these pigs, but it was a start! We went to the next dam and seen about 5 or so more pigs around the same size as the ones we just got. We got up alongside them, and Matt said he would shoot a couple, so he grabbed the 243 and headshot one, but the rest got away through the fence they were too quick for us, we kept the dogs up and kept going. The next spot we went to was quiet also, not much sign of pigs but had a nice creek running alongside the waterhole. I drove across it, and the dogs showed a bit of interest, so we drove a fair bit further, it must have been an old road once upon a time,it came to a hillside, it wasn’t too rough, so I drove up to the top.

At the top, I spotted a boar he was lying on the sand in the afternoon cool air just down from a cave in the side of the hill where he would have been living. I said look at that big fella Matt looks like he’s got two hooks hanging out of 1 side. The boar was already on to us. Matt jumped out and let my main bitch Pip go as he looked like a decent pig. I ran alongside the hill to keep an eye on the pig but it was rocky as with a lot of spinifex, and I lost sight of him for a second as Matt ran Pip down to where he was. She was up in line with me within seconds; she was moving fast and ran straight up the other side of the hill and stopped. I was thinking no way this pig got that far must be in the middle of the creek still! She came back to the creek working her nose where there was a lot of debris and little hidey holes in the rocks, then bang she was on! He let out a few grunts but then started squealing I was surprised because he looked fairly big I got to Pip grabbed a leg and put this old fella out of his misery. He would have been a great pig in his day, but he was a shelly pig with not much go about him but had an awesome set of hooks that I’d never seen before in all the years of hunting these wild boars we love to catch cheers!
