Overview

  • BREED HISTORY
Bruce is a Bitsa but I think he’s mainly Dane Mastiff/Boxer X . He’s out of a local bitch Joka (recently passed away) who has produced a number of handy dogs. A few of the boys also have other pups of hers getting around. Bruce was very easy to train - obedience, hunting, pulling up pigs all came quite naturally for him. As he progressed he turned into a finder/bailer/lugger depending on how big the pig was and his stamina.

TRAINING AND WORKING WITH OTHER DOGS
Bruce was very care free pup, he was easy to train from obedience to hunting. Picking up on everything very quickly which made my job very easy. It was lucky that he did as our main dog had just been put into early retirement and we were just running 2 pups for quite a while. I started him at around 6 months which was when I got him. He loved hunting and being out in the bush from day dot. His worst habit which annoyed everyone was his horrid whinging either in the crate or if he was tied up on the back. I tried for a long time but he just never grew out of it. He followed the other dogs off the ute and on walks almost immediately and was finding consistently on his own by 18 months.

He has always been an awkward runner so he’s never been the fastest but once he gets to the pig by usually pulled them up alright. This is usually done from what I saw by chewing their arse a bit until they turn around and then he could grab an ear. He was definitely a pack dog but is still capable of taking one out on his own. Depending on who I was hunting with he was usually one of the main finders but we all had decent dogs towards the end of his career. Sadly Bruce is now retired due to hip dysplasia but had fair innings going on a few trips north and catching more than his share of good boars. He’ll always be my first dog and my mate – even if he is a cranky old bugger these days.
