Myself and a mate went out for a mid-week run to try our luck hitting up on a few pigs. We arrived to block, plated the dogs, and set out on our way. We walked a few km and over a rocky ridge towards the creek below. As we got about 100 meters off the creek the dogs took off, as we ran in not far behind them, we started seeing pigs running in all different directions. With pigs going everywhere, the dogs split up in pairs and managed to get hold of a good sow and a little boar. We dispatched the sow then ran over to other dogs, as we got to them we noticed another pig not far away. He was an absolute cracker, standing behind a tree watching us. We got in and dispatched the second pig as quickly as possible to run the dogs on to try and hit up the good boar. We run them on, and my three dogs spotted him and took off after him. My mate’s dog ended up going in the opposite direction, possibly picking up the scent from the mob.
With this boar having a fresh set of legs, he was trying to blow the dogs, but they pulled him up at about 600 meters. I said to my mate, you get your dog and come find me. So I started running the 600 meters to attend to my dogs. I saw them battling it out in the creek, so I didn’t hesitate, and I jumped in to give them a hand. Dragging him out and reaching for my knife, I realized it was missing. I knew it was going to be impossible to try and get three dogs that were pinned on the ears off. Having no knife I rolled the big fella over, kneeling on him with all my weight I took my bag off and grabbed out a ratchet strap, and tied the big boy’s legs together and waited for my mate to attend. We dispatched him once my mate arrived and he didn’t disappoint us, he was a cracker pig. Was definitely a hunt to remember but best to never leave your knife in the car.
