Overview

  • By Daniel Eveleigh

Mel and I were traveling around Australia and halfway through our trip. We landed some station work on a property in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Neither of us had any idea about the number of pigs in this part of Australia. We had a pure-bred Bull Terrier that was a town dog/house pet, but he soon picked up the pig chasing game pretty quick. He had a huge heart and a lot of drive but lacked in the speed department, and we lost more pigs than we caught. We were still able to shoot plenty while checking waters and doing lick runs. Our time there had come to an end, and as soon as we arrived back home in New South Wales, we were looking for a position back in the Gulf. We soon had one sorted and we were in need of a dog as the Bull Terrier had passed on.

A family friend had given us a 12month old Bully/Cattle X Bull Arab called Scooby Doo, on the ute she went and we were off to QLD again. The sheer number of pigs made it easy for us to get Scooby Doo going. We would soon pick up some handy boars, but we also came to realize that she couldn’t do it all on her own. We put the managers’ hard biting cattle dog over her and kept two pups, Terra and Beef who together chalked up some numbers between them. From there we have moved back to NSW and closer to family, we’ve added to our pack with a mix of bailers and holders, which we find suits us and the country we hunt. Mel and I enjoy our hunting and seeing our dogs develop and grow.
