“The sound of snapping timber and grunting got the blood rushing again”
Overview
By Jed Farraway
It was a Sunday afternoon and playing football for the Miriam vale Magpies was first on the to-do list. After a cracker game and getting the win against the South Kolan Shark with a 52 to nil win at half time they had had enough and didn’t return to the field. With football ticked off the list with a hat trick of tries, I teed up a hunt with one of my mates Gavin Robertson. We grabbed my dog old Critter and sent it back to the Vale for an afternoon hunt where I had been missing a smart old boar. As we got to the first block Critter floated off the back, only going 300 meters and hit upon a cracker. The sound of snapping timber and grunting got the blood rushing again. Critter ended up letting go after getting shaken up by the big fella, and the boar blew outgoing about 3 kilometres to where Critter pulled him up again. We drove around, getting closer and closer, but the smart boar was on to us.
As we gained ground and started closing the gap, he blew out again. But it didn’t last long, and Critter found an ear again. This time he didn’t let go. As I ran in the boar spotted my headlight and came at me like a scrub bull ready to fight. It was a battle that Critter had to finish on his own. In the end, the pig went to bolt again, and in a split second, the chance I’d been waiting for arrived and I grabbed this old brawler and gave him the blade. In the panic and situation Gav and I wherein we both forgot our phones. With some roast pork awaiting our attendance, we decided to come back the next morning and get photos and weigh the big fella. He weighed in at 102kg and was a great effort for Critter one out in some thick country. As we were taking photos and weighing the boar I knew it wasn’t the big fella I’d been missing for the last couple of hunts. It’s only a matter of time before these big bad boars slip up and I myself can’t wait for the time the next boar slips up.
