Overview

  • By Brain Schalk

Lacey has always been eager to please us from the beginning and showed interest in pigs the very first time we took her out at nine months old. As a pup, she had a rough start prior to us bringing her home. She was nervous and unsure of how to be around people. Once she gained confidence and trust with us, she became one of the most trustworthy dogs I have ever owned. She has always loved the attention and will follow you around all day waiting for a pat. To start with she did have a bad habit of jumping off the ute and running beside it when out hunting rather than staying on the back. We got her out of it, but sometimes if she hasn’t had much work, she will start doing it again. A couple of yells to get up out the window and she stays on the back. She was about the same age as my other bitch who was learning with her.

I didn’t have any other dogs to train them at the time, so it was a little slow going in the beginning. She was the first one to start confidently finding at around 1.5 years old. Once she got the hang of it, she quickly became the leader of the pack and is now one of my main dogs. Shes always had a high hunting drive, and she’s a very motivated and dedicated dog. Lacey will normally find out to the 1km mark and sometimes even pushing out to 3km. She is relatively quick to pull the pigs up, hitting them real hard and head-on. Although if she loses them or falls back, she is highly driven and will continue to work until she pulls them up again, hence the long finding distances. Lacey is always consistent and reliable in both finding pigs and holding them. We have used her to train a lot of pups over the years as well.

She will find off the ute and quad, picking up the scent and following it out too long distances. If the scent is fresh, she will leave the ute and move out fast, so we keep an eye on her as she won’t make a sound. She will generally go until she pulls something up with the fresh scent. If the scent is old, she will lazily jump off the ute, circling around smelling with not much motivation at all. She is great with kids and other animals, she doesn’t often play with the other dogs, she’s a bit of a loner and happy to lay around by herself. Around the house, she loves being lazy. She will lay and chew a bone all day until she gets sight of the hunting gear then she's the first one on the ute, lined up and ready to go. Lacey also has a slight heart murmur which is a birth defect not that you would be able to tell and she can also overheat pretty easily so she has to be watched and pulled up as she doesn’t know when to stop. We much prefer her safety over her performance, but there is no telling her that at all.
