Description :“Sure enough, we heard that sweet sound of a good bail”
Overview
By Cory Smith & Brendon Loller
Well, the hunt started the same as any other, my mate Brendon & I collared the dogs and headed south to a property about an hour away from town. We reached the spot where we knew some good pigs were getting around. It was an overcast day not to hot with a nice wind around. Working the back of the ute today was our 2 bailers Blue dog a Bull Arab x Cattle and Ginger a Pitty/Stag x Bully. We drove for about an hour with the dogs only jumping once going 150 meters and coming back. They were looking keen but came up with nothing, so we kept on trucking through the bush and came up to a water hole. The dogs were looking keen on the Ute. I said to Brendon, “they’re going to go here.” I stopped the ute, but they didn’t jump so I started to drive off, and they both got keen again, I stopped again and off they went. They ran straight to the water then come back to the Ute, but we could tell there was something about as they were still too keen. If you think there is something around it never hurts to get out and go for a bit of a walk.

Get the dogs to follow you, and hopefully, they will find that pig that’s trying to lay low. Brendon & I got out of the Ute and I started to walk towards the water hole when both the dogs took off in the bush, and they were moving fast. We ran back to the ute to get the trackers, watching both the dogs work and waiting to see if they would hit up. Sure enough, we heard that sweet sound of a good bail, and they had him pulled up. We had my holder Ace an American Bulldog x American Staffy in the box. I normally run him in on a lead most days but thought to my self, not today. I let him out of the box, and he took off through the bush. Brendon and I ran after him, running through the bush we could hear the two bailers Ginger & Blue Dog barking. We got about 200 meters from the ute & stopped to listen. I heard a bark from Ace. I turned to Brendon and said, “He’s barking, it must be a good pig for him to bark.” With that we started running again, crossing a creek line, the dogs weren’t too far from the creek maybe another 100 meters.

I got there and Ace was on one ear and Blue Dog was on the other. He had a good set of hooks on him. I yelled out to Brendon who was a few metered behind me. Brendon ran up and grabbed the boar to finish off the job. We realized we forgot a knife so Brendon got the dogs off and I made a quick run to the ute to grab it. After this it was time to carry the big fella out, we took turns carrying him on our backs. It wasn’t very far back to the ute but with that boar on our backs and crossing the creek line it seemed a lot further but we got it back to the Ute eventually. Once we had some photos and we were all set we called it an afternoon. It was a good Sunday afternoon run for Brendon and I so we loaded the dogs and the pig up and started heading back to town. Once we got back to town the next thing to do was to weigh the boar. He comes in at 77kg live, not a huge pig but he had an awesome set of tusks. We were stocked to be out in the bush enjoying what we love to do in Western Australian pig country.
