Overview

Introducing the greatest dog I’ll ever own — my mate Abby. A Bullarab bitch bred by someone down near Braidwood NSW. I would end up with sore hands from typing if I told you every story that I can remember. She was one of them dogs that were honestly just an absolute freak at what she did. I’m sure anyone that saw her work in her prime would agree. I have lost count of the number of quality boars she has caught me in the rugged mountains where I do a lot of hunting. But away from hunting, we just connected in general. If I came home in a bad mood, she was always there to annoy some way to get a smile from me, and she was great with my kids and great with my partner. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better companion. Possibly the one pig that stands out for me would be one she got a few years ago now while hunting the hills. It was a full moon night, which I used to hate hunting. In my opinion, when hunting places that get hit pretty hard, the better pigs are extremely tough to get. They catch on pretty quick if there is a car or hunters about. The smarter boars will normally head for the hills well before your dog can get a scent of them. Over the years I’ve noticed the better fellas are a lot more on the edge of a full moon.

If we end up getting a good boar on the full moon it is normally on foot the following morning in the nastiest country you can find. We still get good jumps, but they normally travel way too far and sometimes end up with nothing. I had to get the dogs out for a run on this particular night, so I thought I would just hunt the full moon anyway. So off we went doing about 70km, no lights on at all (which I used to do a lot of. She gave me the wink in the mirror, and she was off. She headed across the long grassy flat that leads to a mountain. When she got out to about 900 meters I was waiting for that sound. There it was, the good hit up on a boar. It sounded like a good boar, but you can’t tell till you get there I suppose. I got in there as quick as I could, and this pig could fight. He was an earless boar, but Abby held tight and done an awesome job until I could get in there to finish the job. He ended up dressing out at 107kg. Definitely a hunt, I will remember. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get any pups out of Abby, which is a shame because I would have had 50 of them, haha. She was my main dog for many years and would always pick the best pig out of the mob when I finally got out for a west trip.

After the countless hours I’ve spent with her and many other dogs over the years, nothing has compared to her, and I don’t think it ever will. I could go on for hours with stories. Burying her was the hardest thing I’ve done so far, not many days go by without remembering another story with her. They say you only ever have a once in a lifetime hunting buddy, and I can say I’ve had mine.
