Overview

I haven’t written a hunting tale in a while, so here’s one I whipped up about a pig dog legend. Unfortunately, this dog wasn’t exactly mine; he was my Father’s pride and joy and our best dog. One Bull Arab cross Dane that my family will never forget. Cody was his name, and smashing boars was his game. From a young age, he showed potential; he was a weapon from the start. I’m pretty sure I was only a little tacker when he started working for his keep. So Dad’s best dog and I grew up chasing pigs together. I still remember watching dad collaring him up.  You could tell he was proud to be a pig dog by the way he stepped into his plate. He was bred for hunting, built like a machine, and worked harder than any dog I’d ever seen. Now here’s where the real story begins. We were out hunting with a family friend on a block that was filled with boars. The dogs were starting to get keen as we poked around the crop just on sunset, in perfect hunting conditions.

Then suddenly the big fella started barking. That’s when we knew something big was hanging around. His bark was high pitched, loud, and intense. So we let the good old pig dog go. He flew off the back of the Ute and off into the distance. He would have been gone for a good fifteen minutes when we heard one hell of a commotion. The next minute, pigs were flying across the flat everywhere in front of us, but the gun dog was nowhere to be seen. It all went quiet as we waited for the hit up. Then it was on, Cody had got himself a ripper boar. We all piled in the Ute and took off across the paddock. We came to a standstill when the realization hit. Cody was getting on in age but was still a fighter. However, he’d run a bloody long way and was now wrestling with a monster boar one out.  Adrenaline kicked in, and we let the other dogs out and followed them in. As we ran up over the bit of embankment, we saw the other dogs hit up. And still swinging to our amazement was Cody.

That boar wasn’t going anywhere. Once the timing was right, Dad got a chance to dispatch the cranky boar. This pig was a real monster. Cody had outdone himself this time. Everything started to settle down when Cody collapsed. Screaming, Dad and I rushed over to see what was going on. The poor old fella was overheated and worn out.  Dad set off back to get the Ute, and the rest of the crew and I  were left with water bottles and tree leaves trying to cool our beloved dog down. What really makes Cody a true pig dog legend is the next part of this story. As we laid Cody in the back of the Ute his love for the sport really started to show. Too tired to even stand, he laid in the back of the Ute. He could smell pigs off in the distance and not wanting to disappoint his owner. He wanted to follow his instinct, get up and chase them. What a legend, lying on his death bed he still wanted to smash big boars one out. He died doing what he loves; he’s a true pig dog legend.
